Exposing Young Minds to Science and Medicine

Charney, MD It was a special summer of learning for the 120 area high school and college students who participated in Mount Sinai’s Center for Excellence in Youth Education’s (CEYE) research courses, clinical internships, and career preparatory programs. Established in 1975, CEYE aims to increase the presence of historically underrepresented groups in science and medicine by providing students with a wide variety of opportunities for career exploration. Focusing on “Women in Science”

During the 2015 World Science Festival held recently in New York City, the Mount Sinai Health System sponsored a roundtable discussion titled, “Spotlight: Women in Science,” featuring four trailblazers from diverse disciplines, including Patricia Kovatch, Founding Associate Dean for Scientific Computing at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In a casual setting complete with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, Ms. Kovatch and her three co-panelists—anthropologist Dean Falk, PhD; marine chemical biologist Mandë Holford, PhD; and space scientist Tara M. Ruttley, PhD—discussed their life’s work, what inspires them, and their triumphs and challenges.

Science Goes to the Movies

Heather Berlin, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, and Neuroscience, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is co-hosting with Faith Salie, a television and national public radio political and pop culture personality, a monthly series on CUNY TV focusing on science and portrayals of scientists in current films. The series includes a lively discussion about top films such as Birdman, Interstellar, and The Theory of Everything by contributors from a variety of scientific disciplines. (more…)
