Exposing Young Minds to Science and Medicine

Charney, MD It was a special summer of learning for the 120 area high school and college students who participated in Mount Sinai’s Center for Excellence in Youth Education’s (CEYE) research courses, clinical internships, and career preparatory programs. Established in 1975, CEYE aims to increase the presence of historically underrepresented groups in science and medicine by providing students with a wide variety of opportunities for career exploration. Year of the Sheep Celebrated

The Asian American Professional Network, a Mount Sinai Health System employee resource group, and the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, rang in the Year of the Sheep—which began on Friday, February 20—with Lunar New Year Celebrations at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Phillips Ambulatory Care Center (see photo), Mount Sinai Roosevelt, and The Mount Sinai Hospital. The events provided an opportunity for employees, patients, and visitors to enjoy a variety of Asian arts and culture, including music; Chinese, Japanese, and Indian calligraphy; origami; and traditional foods. The Mount Sinai Beth Israel event was hosted by its Diversity Council and LGBT Employee Resource Group, and the Louis Armstrong Department of Music and Medicine.

Champions in Health Care Diversity and Inclusion

The changing ethnic and cultural landscape of New York City is reflected in the diverse patient population served by the Mount Sinai Health System. When physicians, nurses, and support staff speak the same language, or share the same traditions and values as their patients, there is a greater sense of comfort among patients and greater satisfaction with the quality of care they receive.

Mount Sinai’s Diversity Programs Ranked Among the Top

DiversityInc, the nation’s leading publication in advancing excellence in diversity management, has ranked the Mount Sinai Health System No . 6 in its 2014 “Top 10 Hospitals and Health Systems” list. The recognition reflects both the longstanding work of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s diversity program through its Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs and the hospital-based diversity initiatives at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai Beth Israel Brooklyn, Mount Sinai Roosevelt, and Mount Sinai St. Luke’s.

The Mount Sinai Health System’s programs for professional development and its mentoring opportunities for minority faculty and hospital managerial staff were highlighted as particularly outstanding by DiversityInc.
