The United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, MD, MBA, recently visited Mount Sinai Beth Israel’s Opioid Treatment Program at East 125th Street, one of the hospital’s 11 licensed addiction treatment clinics, to get a first-hand view of a facility that is successfully addressing the nationwide opioid epidemic. Mount Sinai’s model opioid treatment program was among the sites recommended to Dr. Murthy by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. (more…)

Expert quilter Lee Ebs visited the Pediatrics Playroom at Mount Sinai Beth Israel on Tuesday, January 20, with dozens of donated baby blankets made by members of Empire Quilters, a nonprofit organization in New York City that is comprised of dedicated quilters. Marcia Graham, CCLS, Senior Child Life Specialist, Mount Sinai Beth Israel Pediatrics, was on hand to accept the colorful blankets and incubator covers that will be used by pediatric patients and premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “Patients and their parents greatly appreciate these quilts and covers,” says Ms. Graham. “Their colors and designs brighten the look of the child’s room and the NICU, taking away the institutional feel. They definitely add a child-friendly touch.”

His boots were enormous, and caked with the dirt of his work. His clothes, brought up by an ER tech in a clear plastic bag, included a construction helmet and vest. Crushing chest pain and shortness of breath had bought him this sunny day off of work and a direct ticket to the cardiac catheterization lab at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. (more…)

The Mount Sinai Hospital has been ranked No. 16 out of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide in the U.S. News & World Report 2014–15 “Best Hospitals” guidebook. Additionally, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai achieved a No. 10 national ranking for Ophthalmology, while Mount Sinai Beth Israel and Mount Sinai St. Luke’s/Mount Sinai Roosevelt attained “high-performing” designations in a total of 11 specialties.
Further, according to U.S. News & World Report, The Mount Sinai Hospital is one of only 17 hospitals to receive “very high scores” in at least six clinical specialties, earning it Honor Roll status.

“I thought I would never live to see the end of that day,” said Mount Sinai Beth Israel patient Robert Cohen, recollecting his experience as a young U.S. infantryman landing on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. Mr. Cohen spent the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing with Alene, his wife of 66 years, his son Michael, two of his eight grandchildren, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel staff, discussing the events of that day, when he was one of 20,000 Allied troops landing at Utah Beach, the westernmost flank of the Normandy invasion.
