I had the opportunity to have breakfast with a dozen employees on Tuesday morning.  I hosted a President’s Breakfast where employees who go “Above and Beyond” are recognized.  Each and every employee who attended demonstrated the excellence that lives at MSBI. These individuals bring something quite remarkable to their jobs every day.  What a pleasure it was to spend an hour with them and hear their stories.

I have had a number of questions about the future of our Graduate Medical Education programs.

I’ve asked Dr. Michael Leitman to update us.

Thanks,

Susan

The Changing Landscape of Graduate Medical
Education at Mount Sinai Beth Israel

The Downtown Transformation has created an opportunity to re-think the traditional paradigm of residency and fellowship training programs.  As the plans for the new hospital develop, I have taken this opportunity to provide our residents and fellows with innovative learning opportunities that will enable them to understand the newer concepts of accountable care, population health, ambulatory care, and reduced reliance upon the traditional inpatient setting.

Mount Sinai Beth Israel has always enjoyed an excellent reputation for its graduate medical education programs.  Presently, more than 420 residents and fellows are based at the Petrie campus.  On July 1, 2014, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai became the sponsor of all of the MSBI programs.  I was appointed as Senior Associate Dean and Dr. Akhtar became Associate Dean for all of the GME programs at MSBI.  Over the last two years and prior to the development of plans for the Downtown Transformation, many programs based at MSBI consolidated with those at other hospitals within the Health System to take full advantage of the wide array of clinical opportunities.  These include the hospice and palliative care, sports medicine, urology, interventional radiology, and geriatric medicine programs.

Over the next few years, additional programs will merge to allow for a diverse and robust educational experience.  Many of these programs will grow and continue to be based at MSBI (Endocrine and Gastroenterology).  The MSBI Neurology program will expand to Mount Sinai West.  Other programs at The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, and Mount Sinai West plan to take advantage of the unique opportunities at the downtown campus (Anesthesia Pain, Emergency Medicine, and Radiology) using MSBI as a clinical training site for their residents and fellows.

When this transition is complete in 2020, MSBI will be the primary clinical site for four residency programs (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, and Psychiatry) and ten fellowships (Gastroenterology, Endocrine, Procedural Dermatology, Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Breast Surgery, Advanced Endoscopy, Breast Imaging, Neurological Movement Disorders, and Brachytherapy).

The Internal Medicine residency will be re-designed to enhance learning for a career in primary care, ambulatory medical care, and medical specialty care.  Residents in this program will spend only about 35 percent of their time in the traditional hospital inpatient setting.

In 2020, close to 170 residents will continue to be based at MSBI as their primary clinical site.  All current and future MSBI residents will graduate from the Icahn School of Medicine.
